The Australasian Championships

Just a quick reminder for Professional Dancers that on Sunday 11th September the Australian Dancing Board’s Australasian Championships is being held once again at Club Marconi in Bossley Park, New South Wales. This year, the event is licenced to Society of Australian Teachers of Dancing.

As always, this event is an important one in the Professional Dancers calendar as it is the selection event for the ADB. The winners of the Modern Ballroom and Latin American sections of the Professional Division will be our first call when needing to nominate professional dancers for international events in which the ADB is invited to field a representative. The ADB are often called upon in this regard, with dancers representing Australia for the Asia-Pacific Titles in Tokyo in September 2011, for example and events already scheduled for 2012.

The finals of the Professional Division will be held in the evening section of the program and as always, will be an event that everyone looks forward to watching.

All ADB registered events include a Professional Category.

The Australasian Championships also includes events for amateur and social dancers.

We look forward to welcoming you to this prestigious event. For those of you who have not been with us before at Club Marconi, we have popped a map below. The facilities of the Club and food outlets are great so never any need to go hungry (we know you work up an appetite while dancing!).

The Australian Dancing Board congratulates our six new scrutineers. The new scrutineers were presented with their certificates at the SATD Highland Titles in Goulburn in July.

Scrutineering is a difficult job with a huge number of intricate rules so achieving the licence to scrutineer is really an achievement.

Six new scrutineers have been licenced after our recent examinations, they are (in no particular order) Sharon Oude Vrielink, Josephine Rooke, Maria Wakefield, Maria Carvalho, Barbara Smith and Christine Coleman.

Unfortunately Barbara and Christine were not available to collect their certificates at the competition, but we have been sure to send them on.

Here, pictured with our Chairman Mr. Ian Clifton-Shanhun are our four new scrutineers who collected their certificate in Goulburn.

A scrutineer has the unenviable task of taking the adjudicators results and determining the winner of an event. Usually (but not always) this is achieved with the use of a software package but the rules are so complex that it has happened that the computer cannot split a tied result!

The scrutineer works with the Chairman of Adjudicators and identifies to him any issues like disqualifications for example.

If you would like to join our growing ranks of scrutineers please drop us a line and we will be happy to send you more information.

Again our congratulations to all our successful candidates.

Society of Australian Teachers of Dancing Team Chosen

A large number of people travelled to Goulburn this month for the SATD Highland Titles from all over the New South Wales and Queensland areas. The Goulburn Soldiers Club proved a sensational venue with a very welcoming atmosphere. Two Western Australian adjudicators also attended, Miss Shirley Bickley and the ADB Chairman Mr Ian Clifton-Shanhun. It is nice to see that Australian Dancing Board registered events are gathering such support from all over the country.

Congratulations to the ten (yes 10!) couples chosen to represent SATD (Society of Australian Teachers of Dancing) at the forthcoming East-West Challenge to be held in Perth Western Australia on August 14th. This is a huge number of dancers to sponsor to travel right across the country. This shows an amazing commitment from the Committee of SATD to support not just our industry but those Ballroom Dancers week after week turn out at our events.

The team was selected at the Southern Highlands Titles held in Goulburn on 9th July 2011. A great time was had by all competitors, spectators and officials with the highlight for the dancers being the announcement of the winners.

Also at this event the successful candidates at the recent Australian Dancing Board examinations for Scrutineers were announced and presented with their certificates (another post has been made with pictures of our successful scrutineering candidates).

A heartfelt thank-you to the Executive Committee of SATD and their army of fantastic volunteers who collectively organised the event and made it such a great day. How exciting it is to see the organisers embracing new ways of extending the joys of dancing to a greater number of participants.

The SATD Contingent at the East-West Challenge will be over 80 strong and we all look forward to a day of light hearted cheer and some serious competition!
